Graduation Requirements
Baccalaureate Degree
A bachelor's degree is an academic title granted to a student who has completed a specific course of study.
The faculty of UNC has established the general requirements you must meet in order to earn a baccalaureate degree:
- Earn a minimum of 120 semester credit hours.
- Have a University of Northern Colorado cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00.
- Certain programs may have additional requirements (e.g. recommendation for teacher licensure for elementary education requires a UNC cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75).
- Have at least 40 credit hours in courses designated as Liberal Arts Core.
- Meet all requirements for the bachelor's degree in your major field of study, as listed in the catalog when the first major is officially declared. If applicable, teacher licensure requirements must be satisfied.
- UNC undergraduate catalogs expire at the end of six years.
Minimum Residency Requirement
You must earn a minimum of 30 credit hours in UNC courses. In addition, 20 of the last 30 credit hours of a degree program must be earned in UNC courses.
Previous Credit Earned
Any college work earned more than 15 years before the time a baccalaureate degree is granted at UNC may be applicable toward a degree at the discretion of the Registrar and the major and minor departments. Some programs may have additional restrictions.
Correspondence Credit
A maximum of 30 semester hours of credit in correspondence and/or continuing education courses from UNC and/or any other institution will be accepted toward graduation. Correspondence credit will not be counted toward the 30 semester credit hour residency requirement. All correspondence courses and/or transfer work must be completed, received, graded and recorded before the semester of graduation.
Double Major
If you fulfill the requirements for multiple majors and have completed less than 30 additional semester hours for each major beyond the first, you will receive one diploma with both majors listed on it. Both majors will be listed on your transcript.
Multiple Degrees Achieved Simultaneously
If you have more than one major and have satisfactorily completed a minimum of 30 additional semester hours for each additional major, you will receive a diploma for each degree earned. All degrees will be listed on your transcript.
Next Higher Degree
You may, in the last semester of study for one degree, register for graduate courses that exceed the requirements for that degree, provided that your application for admission to the next higher degree program is accepted before the start of the final semester. If you have been admitted to the program for the next higher degree at UNC, you must complete "A Petition to Count Work on the Next Higher Degree" that may be obtained from the Graduate School, (970) 351-2831.
Latin Honors
In order to qualify for honors and have the honors recognized at graduation, you must have successfully completed 50 semester hours of UNC credit prior to your final semester and achieved the necessary cumulative grade point average. After your final semester, you must have successfully completed 56 semester hours of UNC credits and have achieved the necessary cumulative grade point average. After confirmation that you have met these requirements, the honors designation will be indicated on your transcript.
